Satellite Symposia

8th Conference on Kidney Disease in Disadvantaged Populations
12-14 April, 2011
Victoria B.C., Canada

We are pleased to invite you to attend the satellite conference taking place after WCN organized by the ISN Global Outreach Committee for Kidney Health in Disadvantaged Populations (CKHDP). Acclaimed as an attractive and well attended Post Congress satellite meeting of the WCN, the meeting will focus on renal problems linked to non-communicable diseases faced by racial and ethnic minorities, indigenous and migrant populations. Experts in the field of epidemiology, preventive and clinical nephrology will deliver up-to-date information in relevant areas. The satellite meeting is a platform to discuss and debate the latest advances in these areas of nephrology, and is intended for anyone involved in the prevention and treatment of renal disease in these populations.

Please visit the satellite website at www.wcn2011satellite.com/ for more information about the program and registration.

The first Fabry Nephropathy Satellite “Focus on Fabry Nephropathy: Biomarkers, Progression and Disease Severity”, an Official Satellite of the World Congress of Nephrology, was held in Bergamo Italy in May 2009. The second Fabry Nephropathy Satellite “Focus on Fabry Nephropathy: Biomarkers, Progression and Treatment Opportunities” is now being organized as an Official Satellite of the World Congress of Nephrology, and will be held in Vancouver, Canada on April 12–14, 2011.

The aim is to bring together research geneticists, nephrologists and clinicians, and experts from related specialties to explore the current state-of-the-art for the diagnosis and treatment of nephrologic issues in patients with Fabry Disease.

The venue and format of the satellite emphasizes the development of collaborative efforts, stimulating discussions, novel insights and consensus positions. The conference speakers will cover a variety of aspect of Fabry Nephropathy: natural history, factors that drive progressive loss of kidney function and responses to therapy, biomarkers for understanding the progression of disease and response to therapy, pathology of Fabry nephropathy, and developing treatment options for Fabry Nephropathy. There will be a special emphasis on the structure/function analysis of alpha-galactosidase A, and the role of the lysosome and podocytes in the development and progression of Fabry nephropathy.

Of special note will be workshops that address:
• Screening in High Risk Populations and Neonates
• Biomarkers: Current Status and Future Directions
• Vascular Injury and Dysfunction in Fabry Disease
• Enzyme Replacement and Alternative Therapies: Current Status of Trials and Future Directions
• Renal Pathology Workshop

On behalf of the organizers, we want to extend our sincerest appreciation to the sponsors of this satellite: Amicus Therapeutics, Genzyme Corporation, and Shire, plc. Without their unrestricted educational grant support, the satellite and subsequent workshop reports simply would not be possible.
